Wooster District Preview - Thoughts and Round 1 Predictions

So you've read a snippet about each team, now let's get down to the overall thoughts on this year's district tournament and the matchups for round one.

Once more, here's the tournament bracket full of dates and times.

The night Kevin Summers went for 51 and 22.

A few weeks ago, Northwestern senior Brennan McKean dropped 48 points in the Huskies win over Orrville. It got me thinking about whether or not it was the most points scored by an opponent in our gym. I have to think it is, but really no way of knowing.

What I do know is this...one of Orrville's all-time greats, Kevin Summers scored 51 points against Copley in his junior year (1990-91 season) which is still a record for scoring at Orrville.

He didn't just score that night either, he tacked on 22 rebounds (also a school record), had 2 blocks and 3 assists.

I don't want to turn this into a love-fest for something that happened 20 years ago or anything, but that's a pretty awesome effort, and worth a little look-back in time.

Boys Basketball: Wooster District Preview

It's that time of year again...tournament time. I know this year hasn't been what any of us in Orrville thought it would be, but hopefully we'll still show up at Wooster High School (and Triway High School for the girls) to support our Red Riders.

It's also time for the 2nd Annual Wooster District Preview, brought to you by this site and Andrew Marcum's OhioBasketball.net. Andrew does a great job in tracking local basketball so we'll once again put our heads together and see if we can provide some sort of roadmap. Call it a fan guide if you will.

Winter Sports Tournament Info/Brackets

Here's all you need for the upcoming Winter Sports tournaments. Please, please, please consider buying tickets presale (when available) as the school keeps a portion, but does not get anything from tickets purchased at the gate.

Boys - Wooster District Bracket - Northeast Ohio Regional Bracket - Statewide "Sweet 16" Bracket

Madison Monheim qualifies for State Swimming Meet

Orrville sophomore Madison Monheim became the first girls swimmer in OHS history to qualify for the state swimming meet.

She'll compete in the 200 yd Freestyle swim at this weekend's meet at the Branin Natatorium in Canton (right beside the Fieldhouse). She swam a personal best 1:56.47, good enough for a 7th place finish at Friday's Division 2 district meet at Cleveland State. The top 3 finishers in each event earned automatic bids, and the next 11 fastest times statewide earned at-large berths. Madison earned one of those at-large spots.

Was 1992 the Greatest Season of Wayne/Holmes County Basketball History?

Just thinking out loud here.

Great article in today's Daily Record about Northwestern guard Brennan McKean closing in on his school's scoring record. Orrville fans got to see him up-close and personal last weekend, so no more really needs to be said about his talent...only that I hope he "takes his talents to Beall Avenue" and plays for the College of Wooster next season.

As an accompaniment to the article was a list of the top 25 scorers in area history. It's stat-geekery gold for someone like me. The list is littered with names from the past and present that any area hoops fan would immediately recognize.

What also jumped out at me was the number of great players that all happened to graduate in 1992. Look at these names and their ranking on the all-time area top 25.

What a Difference a Week Makes

Not the best week for Orrville sports was it? I guess that will happen from time to time. The girls saw their 11-game win streak snapped by Wooster (yuck!) and the boys dropped two straight.  But fear not, faithful reader. All is not lost.

Let's charge forward with some good news to go along with the not-so-good.

Onward....

Winter Sports Update - Coming down the homestretch

Tournament time for winter sports is right around the corner. Things are looking up for the basketball teams and the wrestling team had a nice showing, individually at least, at the recent Ohio Cardinal Conference championships.

Let's talk about it all...

In Honor of 'Signing Day'......

It's February 2nd, Groundhog Day. But more than that...it's national letter of intent day, or "Signing Day" for thousands of high school seniors all over the country.

The halls of Orrville High School will again be the site for several Red Rider seniors to declare their intent to pursue college athletics. And for the second time in as many years, multiple Red Riders will sign their name on the dotted line to play at the Division I level.

Tim Hiller hired as head football coach at Gull Lake (Michigan) High School

Great news out of Michigan today.  Orrville and Western Michigan grad Tim Hiller has been named the head football coach at Gull Lake High School.

Here's the article from MLive.com announcing the decision, and here's a link to Gull Lake's webpage.

Gull Lake is a northeast suburb of Kalamazoo, where Tim played his college ball.  Tim will also serve as the marketing and community relations director for the district.
