District Brackets Set, Plybon at Akron, College Signees

The girls and boys basketball brackets are set after today's boys seeding.  It's a great time of year if you're a basketball fan.

Boys
The Orrville boys received the #2 seed in the Wooster Division 3 District and will kick off tourney play on February 28th at 7pm against the winner of the Loudonville/Waynedale game.

***New this year is that the higher seeded team in the sectional round actually gets to host the game, so regardless of who wins between Loudonville and Waynedale, Orrville will be the higher seeded team, so the game will be played at Bob Knight Gym.***

If the Riders win that game, they will advance to the district round with games to be played at Wooster High School.

Here's the full boy's bracket courtesy of PitmanStats.com.

While I think Orrville deserved some consideration for the #1 seed due to wins over Norwayne and Mansfield Senior...close losses to Coventry (1 point) & Tuslaw (1 point) no doubt hurt those chances.  I'm content with the #2 seed and think we'll need to play 3 good games to advance to the Canton Fieldhouse regional.

The boys are coming off a weekend that saw them go on the road and beat Mansfield Senior (first time in 5 years) and beat cross county rival Smithville.  They're 11-7 on the season and 6-5 in the OCC.  They jump right back into action with games at Northwestern on Tuesday and at Madison on Friday.

Girls
The girls received the #5 seed in the Wooster district and will face Canton Central Catholic on 2/19 at 7pm.  Similar to the boys tourney, the higher seed will host the first 2 rounds.  Canton Central is the #7 seed so Orrville will host the first round game, but if they win and advance to face Tuslaw (the #3 seed), that game would be at Tuslaw.

If the girls advance to the district round, those games will be played at Wooster High School (not Triway as has been the case for the past few years).

Here's the full girl's bracket.

The girls finish up the regular season this Thursday at home vs Lexington.  It's also senior night.

Plybon Shining at Akron
Orrville grad Hannah Plybon is having a nice freshman season for the Akron Zips, averaging 7.5 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game.  She's 1 of just 4 girls on the team to start all 22 games on the season.  The Zips are 8-2 when she scores 10 points or more.

They're in 2nd place in the MAC east with an 8-3 conference record and a 14-8 overall record.

Signing Day
Congrats to 5 OHS seniors on making decisions to continue their athletic careers at the college level this past week.

Trevor Summers - Football - Malone University
Blake Dennis - Football - University of Akron
Stuart Schley - Baseball - West Point (Army)
JT Perez - Baseball - Cincinnati
Elijah Coleman - Track - Kent State

Congrats to the 5 above, and to all seniors looking at continuing their careers, both academic and athletic, in college.  If there are others that I'm missing, please let me know.

Do you happen to keep basketball box scores for the red riders? Trying to fill in some holes from this past season.

Andrew, I don't keep the box scores. Were you looking for game by game stats or season totals?

If you have an online subscription to the Daily Record, you could go back though all their issues & get the box scores that way.
