Here & There....Summertime Reading

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far. It seems amazing, but football season is only 2 months away. Wont be long until 2-a-days begin and another season of Friday nights at Red Rider Stadium will be upon us.

Got a few items of note below so lets get to it.

OHS Sports Hall of Fame Golf Outing
The 21st OHSHOF golf outing is in the books, and it was another successful (and dry) day of golf at Riceland Golf Course. Eighteen teams (72 golfers) participated this year with the winning team carding an impressive 55 (16 under par). More importantly, 29 sponsors gave generously to the outing, ensuring the continuation of the Sports Hall of Fame's two $1,000 scholarships given at the Senior Assembly each spring to an OHS male & female senior.

The winners were the team of Rick Troyer, OHS softball coach Craig Johnson, Jeff Johnson & Eric Shank. They received a plaque and a $100 Riceland gift certificate. The second place team of Jon Gresser, Dan Blosser, Gary Reynolds & Ken Hoffman shot a 57 (14 under par) and also received a plaque and a $50 Riceland gift certificate. Team Kovach won the day's only skin (an eagle on #9) and pocketed $160. Former Red Rider assistant and former Rittman head coach Al Teague won the 50/50 drawing and won $90. There were also awards for long drive and closest to the pin, each winner received a dozen golf balls.

We'd love to see more teams participate next year in this worthwhile cause. I know it seems like every weekend there's a different group having a golf outing and local businesses get asked to sponsor a lot of different events. Special thanks go out to all 29 sponsors, the golfers and all those who give of their time to a good cause.

In case you missed it, here's the announcement of this year's HOF induction class.

OHSAA Basketball Changes
I mentioned it on Facebook & Twitter, but not here. The OHSAA recently released their divisional alignments for the next two seasons, and just like one of my readers & commenters predicted the Red Rider boys basketball team fell right on the edge of Division 2 & 3. In the end, the line was drawn between Division 2 & 3 at 215 boys, and Orrville's enrollment of 214 will keep us in Division 3 by ONE SINGLE MALE STUDENT. Wow.

Here's the breakdown from the OHSAA website.

Oh, our friends from Triway are now in D-2 and will head back to the Canton Fieldhouse district.

The state also approved a 22-game schedule for basketball set to begin in the 2012-13 season.  Since we're in the OCC, 14 of our games are already in stone, but this change will allow us to schedule two additional non-conference games.  The possibilities are endless, but I'd love to use these two games to schedule some tough teams that will give us a good game, and bring a crowd year in and year out.

Matthew Johnson in the Minors
OHS grad Matthew Johnson was assigned this week to the Vancouver Canadians minor league team.  Their team website is here.  This will be Matthew's 2nd season in the minor leagues.  He spent last season as part of the Auburn Doubledays of the New York Penn League.  Good luck to Matthew.

Kyle in Nuremberg
This was mentioned in the Daily Record a few weeks ago, but Orrville grad Kyle Simmons has landed in Germany and is playing professional football for the Nuremberg Rams. Here's their website (hope you know German).  Kyle's even become an advertising vehicle for the Rams.

The team hasn't lost a game since Kyle arrived and last week beat the #1 team in the league.

Here's a video of Kyle in action posted at the Ohio Northern Football Facebook page.

What a great opportunity this has to be for Kyle.

7-on-7 Football Dates
This past Saturday was supposed to be the first 7-on-7 for the football team (at Ashland U.) but it was canceled due to not enough teams being able to attend.  Regardless, here's the schedule for the other 7-on7's over the next month.

Massillon - Wednesday July 13th @ 5pm
Akron - Thursday July 21st.  Time TBA, but probably will start late morning.
Gull Lake HS - Saturday July 23 @ 10am.  This will be at Orrville.  Gull Lake is the team OHS grad Tim Hiller will coach.  Should be a fun day as Tim returns to Orrville as a head coach of his own team.

New Helmets
Hearing new football helmets are on order for the 2011 season.  It was originally planned to just replace the senior's helmets each year over the next 3 or 4, but it was eventually decided to purchase new helmets for all players in grades 10 through 12.  The helmets being purchased are the Riddel Revolution Speed model, which tested high in terms of safety.

These should look good painted in Orrville colors, and more importantly, equip our kids with safety in mind.

New Turf at Arlin Field
If you'd have asked me to list the likelihood of turf being put in at the 7 OCC fields (Ashland already has it), Mansfield would have near, if not at the bottom.  But as explained in this article, Arlin Field is in the process of getting turf right now, and it will be ready when the Riders visit in week 5.

A very needed improvement that will make games in Tyger country much more enjoyable, and should benefit all OCC schools for years to come.

Makes me excited to see the improvements still yet to begin at our own stadium.  New light poles & a new scoreboard should begin being installed in the next few weeks.

Scoreboard Update
Speaking of the new scoreboard...I came across a picture of Louisville's stadium which now has turf.  Check out this picture of their scoreboard.  Now compare it to the concept of our new stadium that I posted a week ago.  Pretty similar, no?  Orrville's first football scrimmage is at Louisville this year, so we'll get an up-close look at it.

Massillon Basketball
Saw this note in the Canton paper last week that two former Orrville basketball coaches were mentioned as having applied for the open Massillon basketball job.  Good luck to Don Short & Mekos Denson in that process.

Smitty 3-on-3 Tournament
The newly renamed Steve "Smitty" Smith 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held as part of the 4th of July festivities at Orr Park.  Calvin Tuggle & Rocky Smith are now running it.  I saw registration forms at Expert T's or you could get in touch with Calvin or Rocky.  The tournament starts on Saturday July 2nd at 9am.  Prizes will be awarded to the top 2 teams in each division.

Monheim on the Recruiting Trail
Lastly, wanted to update everyone about (now senior) Mason Monheim and the attention he continues to get on the recruiting trail.  A few weeks ago he attended Pitt's summer football camp, and yesterday he was at Michigan State's camp.  The coaches at MSU are very high on his ability, calling him one of their top linebacker targets.  His performance was said to be encouraging and he was told by MSU coaches that he did everything he needed to do.  Hopefully a scholarship offer is coming soon.  I've had a good feeling about Michigan State since learning they were interested in him.  It's a Big10 school led by a guy with Ohio State roots (Mark D'antonio) and in my opinion, they are  program about to make a splash nationally.  Mason would be a good fit there.

He will attend OSU's football camp this coming weekend.  Who knows, if MSU offers, Ohio St. may sit up & take notice too.

Mobile Blog
One more item. Blogger recently released a new improvement to their blog hosting service that streamlined the appearance of site when accessed by a smart phone or other mobile device. If you have an iPhone or Android phone, check out the site on that device. I think you'll find it's much easier to read & navigate.
