Orrville Fall Sports Update # 2

The Fall Sports season is coming to a close, with some sports already done for the season. Seems like just yesterday we were getting ready for another football season, and now we're 2 weeks away from the Orrville-Wooster game.

Here's what's going on....

Sorry for the absence lately...life got in the way, and as I've mentioned before, that's first for me. I apologize for missing the last few weeks of football game previews (first ones I've missed in 4 years of doing this site).

What better time to rev things back up again...because it's Wooster Week and several fall sports teams are still alive in tournament play, so let's get it started.

A Season of Champions at OHS

We sometimes (all the time?) take success for granted at Orrville.  But this needs to be appreciated.  Can you remember a more successful season than 2011-12 in terms of the number of OHS athletic teams that have had successful and sometime history-making seasons?

Week 2 Review & Upcoming Schedule

Week 2 of football season is in the books...a nice 52-7 thumping over Triway. Again, can't complain about the points this offense has put up and the play of the defense either. But still lots to work on, but that's a good thing. No reason to peak in week 2. Seems that through history, Coach Davault's team hit their stride late in the season and are playing their best ball late in the season.

I'll hit the high points of the win over Triway, look ahead to week 3 vs. Copley and look at the upcoming week for all the fall sports teams.

Updated OCC All-Sports Standings..and my idea to make it better

Saw this on the Ohio Cardinal Conference website the other day.  It's the standings page for the OCC All-Sports championship each school year based on order of finish in each respective sport. Standings are below in case you don't want to click on the link. I also included the number of varsity sports at each respective school.

Complaining about Parochial Schools....again....and my solution.

I wrote on this topic last year, but it's such an easy target, I'll trot it out again this year. The just-completed state football championships again pointed out the lack of a level playing field in Ohio high school football, as 5 of the 6 state title winners were private schools.

Stats never lie...and I've got a bunch of 'em to prove my point.

Nathan Rosenbaum finishes 27th at State Cross Country Meet

Orrville senior Nathan Rosenbaum clocked a time of 16 minutes, 30 seconds in the Division 2 State Cross Country race in Columbus earlier today, good enough for a 27th place finish.

His time was nearly 30 seconds quicker than his regional time of 16:56 (14th place).

Coming out of a stacked Boardman, Nathan was one of 11 regional qualifiers to finish in the top 30 of the state meet.

Congrats to Nathan and his family. He was named OCC Boys Runner of the Year, won the Ohio Cardinal Conference meet as well as the Wayne County Invitational and was the first Orrville male runner to qualify for the state meet since 2000 (Ryan Hochstetler).

Hochstetler, who is one of Rosenbaum's coaches/trainers said that he thinks Rosenbaum's finish is the 3rd fastest finish in a 5,000k (3.1 mile) race at the state meet by an Orrville runner, behind 2-time state champ Ben Weeman and Ben Stangelo.  Not sure on the time of Stangelo, but Weeman ran a 15:14.6 in 1983 which earned him a 2nd consecutive state title.

I spoke to Nathan's father last night and he said he is looking to major in engineering in college, and would like to continue competing in cross country. He mentioned Ohio Northern as a possible college destination for Nathan.

Cross Country is an interesting sport.  I know every sport requires off-season preparation, but that's where cross country meets are won, in your off-season conditioning.  Nathan put in the work and his running this season were a direct result of that work and dedication.

It's a testament to his hard work and drive, and will serve him well as he endeavors on his college and post-college careers.

Congrats Nathan, from all of Orrville.  Great accomplishment, and I think you did just fine in "putting Orrville running back on the map," as you told the Daily Record.  In that regards, 'Mission Accomplished.'

Below is ticket info for Thrusday's volleyball match with Gilmour Academy, Friday's football playoff game versus Triway....and info on Orrville senior Nathan Rosenbaum running in the state cross country meet.

If anyone is planning to attend all three (and possibly four if the girls win on Thursday), give me a shout.  Got an idea for a little road-trip assignment.

We'll save the football stuff for last. I'd rather highlight the positive first.  Let's talk Orrville Cross Country & Volleyball before we get to the ugliness that was Friday night against Clear Fork.
